Tractor-trailer destroyed by train after accident in Mentz

First responders say a train collided with a tractor-trailer in Port Byron on Friday around 3:15 pm.

The accident report came in to first responders, which prompted a response from Port Byron Rescue and Ambulance, as well as Weedsport EMS.

The accident took place on North Main Street Road and New York Central Road.

First responders tell us the train struck the rig, which was heavily damaged. The trailer portion of the rig was taken down the track with the train.

As of 3:50 pm the DEC was responding due to a diesel fuel spill at the scene. The Auburn Citizen reports that there were no injuries in the wreck, but that the site has seen its share of accidents.

Most recently in 2015 when a vehicle was struck by a train. No one was injured then, but a Port Byron man was killed in 2016 while crossing the tracks as a train was approaching.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area for the time being.
