Fallen tree in Fleming causes temporary closure of Route 38

A fallen tree off of Route 38 in Fleming caused a portion of the road to be closed for nearly an hour Tuesday afternoon.

Across from the intersection of Mobbs Road and Route 38, also known as West Lake Road, a large leg of a willow tree — about one-third of the tree — fell on a utility pole, Fleming Highway Superintendent Kerry Smith said on the scene.

He said that a concerned passerby called when they saw the tree arching over the utility pole and power lines.

The Fleming Fire Department was on the scene first, Smith said, although nothing needed to be extinguished.

“It didn’t catch real good fire yet,” Smith said, explaining that there were only some sparks and smoke on the right side of the utility pole.

Smith said crews got to the scene around 11:45 a.m. and West Lake Road was closed for about a two mile stretch from Forest Hill Drive down to Stone School Road. The roads were closed from about 12:15 p.m. until nearly 1 p.m.
