People come together for fun, food and nostalgia at Skaneateles Field Days

Dozens of young eyes narrowed as children placed a leg forward at the fun run at Skaneateles Field Days Saturday.

“On your mark!” Jay Williams exclaimed into a mega phone before one of the competitions began at Austin Park. Many of the children then placed a leg before far over the line before Williams asked them to back up a tad as the crowd of parents and onlookers laughed. The two-day field days is a fundraiser for the Skaneateles Fire Department.

The children dashed as the race began. Before the race, Ainsley Balestra, 3, still had plenty of energy, as her mother, Samantha Balestra, swung her off the ground briefly with her arms. Samantha said she was glad she and Ainsley made it out to the event.

“It’s just a fun community event. We look forward to it every year, and it’s great to support the fire department,” she said.

Skaneateles Fire Department vice president Marty Lynn said the fun run was a new addition to the event this year. The department had wanted to set up a children’s run for years, Lynn said, but didn’t want to set it at the same time as the adult race and the parade, both of which will be held Sunday. After the first set of children finished their lap and received a medal, Lynn said he was happy about the turnout for the run.
