Giancarlo Stanton, Gleyber Torres and Luke Voit comprised the home portion of a power show through the first eight innings, but the long ball proved to be the Yankees’ undoing in the ninth. Victor Martinez and Niko Goodrum hit back-to-back homers as the Tigers stunned Dellin Betances and the Yankees, who dropped an 8-7 heartbreaker on Thursday evening at Yankee Stadium.
Chad Green, David Robertson and Zach Britton had combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter J.A. Happ, who surrendered a season-high three home runs. Betances struck out the first man he faced in the ninth, but after a walk, Martinez tied the game with his second blast of the night. Goodrum hooked a solo shot inside the right-field foul pole to put Detroit on top.
