Downtown Ithaca invites CU, IC and TC3 students to ‘Welcome Student Weekend’ celebration

Live performances, music entertainment and activities will be held on the Commons this weekend to welcome local college students to Ithaca.

About 2,500 first-time Cornell University students, along with Cornell resident assistants and staff, are expected to participate in CU Downtown from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Restaurants and stores downtown will offer special samples, discounts and freebies for the students who stop by.

“Welcome Weekend is Downtown Ithaca’s way of building a stronger connection with the student population, to encourage them to frequently visit downtown and feel comfortable in this community for the next few years,” said Allison Graffin, director of marketing for Downtown Ithaca Alliance. “Downtown offers a host of shops, restaurants, services and entertainment for students to feel at home in Ithaca.”

On Sunday, about 700 new Ithaca College and 100 to 150 Tompkins Cortland Community College students, as well as several residence assistants and staff, are expected to participate in similar activities from 1 to 5 p.m. during IC and TC3 Downtown Day.

Before the celebration, students will learn how to use the Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit (TCAT) bus system and will become familiar with TCAT’s new real-time bus schedules on the free MyStop mobile app, Graffin said.

More information on the activities planned for Saturday and Sunday can be found on Facebook, under the events CU Downtown and IC & TC3 Downtown Day.
