Union members concerned over new Cayuga Community College board meeting time

A change in the Cayuga Community College Board of Trustees' meeting time sparked concern from union members who are worried they will be shut out.

The board approved a resolution at its Thursday night meeting to change the monthly meeting time from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. starting in September. Board chair Linda Van Buskirk said the 5 p.m. time made it difficult for trustees Stephanie Hutchinson and Pat Mahunik to attend and that trustees agreed the morning would be better. The 5 p.m. time had been in place since it was changed from 6 p.m. in December 2017. A 9 a.m. start was mentioned before 8 a.m. was picked.

Trustee John Camardo said he was worried that meeting in the morning would make it difficult for CCC employees and members of the public to attend. He suggested meetings remain at 5 p.m. Van Buskirk said that wasn't an option, as it was a burden for some trustees. Camardo made a motion to push the time change back to a later date, but no one seconded.

Jo Ann Harris, co-president of the Educational Support Professionals union, said that as an employee at CCC's Fulton campus, she believes it will be difficult to receive supervisor permission for the time necessary to attend morning meetings.
