Camper destroyed days before weekend trip in Phelps (photos)

Firefighters in Ontario County battled an overnight camper fire, which was reported in the Town of Phelps on Park Street.

Around 1 am crews were called to 43 Park Street for that camper fire. Firefighters from Phelps and Oaks Corners responded to the scene, which remained active for several hours.

First responders say the camper was about 20 feet from a home, and due to propane tanks exploding as firefighters battled the blaze – Clifton Springs Fire Department was called to the scene, as well.

The family that lived in the house was unharmed thanks to the quick action of a neighbor. That person alerted the family inside that their camper had caught fire.

The fire chief on-scene reported that due to the exploding propane tanks, the camper was a total loss. Family members tell us that they were planning a camping trip this weekend. The camper was fully gassed up and hooked up to a battery charger.

However, firefighters noted that the family and everyone around it was ‘very lucky’.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
