Poll: Cuomo leads Nixon by 31 points in Democratic primary for governor

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is maintaining a 2-to-1 lead over activist and actress Cynthia Nixon in their Democratic primary election matchup, according to a new Siena College poll published Tuesday.

Cuomo leads Nixon 60 to 29 percent among likely voters in the Sept. 13 primary, the poll found. Cuomo’s 31-point lead is down 4 percentage points from Siena’s last poll of Democratic voters in June.

The two-term governor has a commanding lead over Nixon among likely Democratic voters in every region of the state, the poll found. Cuomo leads by 58 points in the downstate suburbs, 29 points in New York City and 21 points in Upstate New York.

Nixon, best known for her acting role in “Sex and the City,” has run a campaign to the left of Cuomo. She received the endorsement Sunday of the Democratic Socialists of America, a group that backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in her Democratic primary upset last month of Rep. Joe Crowley, D-New York.

The new Siena poll also found New York City Public Advocate Letitia James with an early lead over three Democratic primary opponents in the race for the party’s ballot line for attorney general.
