Casella says recycling market is declining

Officials at Casella Waste Services, operator of the Ontario County Landfill, are concerned about the decline in markets and prices for selling recycled materials.

In addition to depositing household waste, Casella operates a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at the landfill site.

New landfill general manager Mark Clinker will be introduced at Monday’s meeting of the Planning and Environmental Quality Committee of the county Board of Supervisors.

His baptism by fire will include a report on the challenges the company faces in finding markets for the recycled glass, metal, paper, plastic and other materials processed at the MRF. And if a market can be found, another concern is how much will be paid for those materials.

As a result, there is concern that many recyclables will be landfilled.

Casella has submitted copies of newspaper articles about the problem to committee members, and the committee meeting will be at the MRF, with a tour of the facility available as part of the meeting.
