No strategy to address blight in Wayne County can be devised without the help of the residents affected by it, said Brian Pincelli, the county’s director of economic development and planning.
That’s why the county — in conjunction with consultant LaBella Associates of Rochester — is encouraging residents to take part in a survey focused on derelict properties, from how residents define it to possible properties within their neighborhoods that fall within that definition.
With the information, the county can make a better determination of “where we should be putting our resources and what we should be focusing on,” Pincelli said.
In general, derelict properties are defined as abandoned properties; unsafe properties; those with major code violations; and absentee-owner properties that are rented but where little maintenance has been done.
They often are in various states of foreclosure.
