Balter vs. Katko: GOP congressman, Democratic challenger prep for election showdown

U.S. Rep. John Katko wants to run on his record. Democratic challenger Dana Balter is just as eager to talk about what she perceives as the Republican congressman’s shortcomings.

After the Democratic primary Tuesday in the 24th Congressional District, the general election race is set. Balter, D-Syracuse, will challenge Katko, R-Camillus, in a contest to decide who will represent central New York, including all of Cayuga County, in Congress for the next two years.

Katko is seeking a third term in the House of Representatives. In an interview Friday, he touted his success ushering legislation through Congress. According to Congress.org, he’s had 26 bills pass the House during his two terms in office. Three of those bills became law. The total excludes other measures he has sponsored that were part of larger bills signed by either former President Barack Obama or current President Donald Trump.

Each of Katko’s bills has been cosponsored by at least one Democrat.

He also highlighted other achievements, including increased funding for water infrastructure projects and a bill to combat the opioid and synthetic drug crisis that he considers a “game-changer for law enforcement.”
