Waterloo High principal now assistant principal

Waterloo High School Principal Thomas Mitchell is stepping down for a new job — Waterloo High School assistant principal.

The Board of Education, meeting in special session Wednesday morning, voted to make the change at Mitchell’s request.

Mitchell, a Phelps resident, was given a four-year probationary appointment as assistant principal, with a reduction in salary. He was appointed principal in August 2017, coming to the district from the Brighton school district, where he was an assistant principal.

In June 2017, the board named Christal Kent acting assistant principal as a teacher on special assignment. Kent has returned to her reading coordinator position and the district was advertising for candidates for a dean of students for the upcoming school year after getting few applicants for the assistant high school principal position.

Superintendent of Schools Terri Bavis said Mitchell asked for the probationary appointment as assistant principal, and the board will now seek applicants for the principal position.
