The effort to save a historic building on the Ag Station campus is apparently over.
Jan Nyrop, director of Cornell AgriTech at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, informed employees Friday by email that Parrott Hall, site of the first building on the station property, will be demolished this week, with work starting as early as Monday.
The building, transferred from Cornell to the state in the 1970s, has fallen into disrepair because of a lack of maintenance on the part of the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, which took ownership of the building from Cornell in the 1970s.
The state had originally planned to convert the building into a historic site, but that effort never panned out.
The building was the first in the city to be named to the National Register of Historic Places.
The agency determined that the building’s condition makes it a poor candidate for restoration.
