Katko on family separation policy: U.S. must keep borders secure ‘in a humane way’

Families entering the U.S. illegally are being separated, and U.S. Rep. John Katko is among those who are criticizing the Trump administration’s policy.

Despite President Donald Trump’s claim that Democrats are to blame, the policy his administration implemented calls for children to be separated from their parents if they are caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Officials believe the policy will reduce the number of immigrants entering the country illegally.

But bipartisan members of Congress who have visited the border recently have criticized the “zero-tolerance” policy. Media reports have shown children being held in chain-linked cages.

“We must keep our borders secure, however, we must do so in a humane way that preserves family unity and keeps young children safe,” Katko, R-Camillus, said in a statement. “I urge the administration to prioritize these principles in enforcing the laws of this country.”

The Trump administration hasn’t indicated the policy will change anytime soon. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Monday accused the media of spreading false information about the policy and said the administration “will not apologize” for its law enforcement efforts.
