With a roster filled with underclassmen, several of which were freshmen and sophomores, there were whispers that perhaps this would be just the second time in 22 years that Penn Yan would fail to win a Section V championship and advance to the state tournament.
Turned out, the kids from Penn Yan, no matter how young they are, just know how to play the game, and coach Brian Hobart guided his Mustangs all the way to the Class D state championship game Saturday morning at St. John Fisher College.
However, the glorious ride – which included stirring state tournament comeback victories over Akron and Chenango Forks – came to a crashing end as Penn Yan ran into the senior-laden powerhouse from Pleasantville and got blown out 16-2 by the state’s No. 1 team.
