City: No demo for Linden St. building

A vacant building at 29 Linden St. that faced possible demolition is safe.

For now.

In May, City Council gave building owner Calvin Ruthven until May 11 to provide an acceptable plan for either demolition or repair. He apparently has provided such a proposal, as workers have been on-site doing some painting of what remains of the building that was partially demolished as part of a now-scuttled plan to redevelop it into a first-floor beer garden and basement-level bar.

The top floor of the building was removed during the demolition to address bowing walls that Ruthven said he could not afford to repair.

Few details have been revealed by the city regarding Ruthven’s plan.

Acting City Manager Sage Gerling said by email that an “overview of the repair work includes facade painting, structural support beams, deck, roofing system and work to the brick wall areas.”
