One of the reasons why Penn Yan coach Brian Hobart likes to play a tougher regular-season schedule is for the exact situation that arose Saturday morning at All High Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the state Class D boys’ lacrosse tournament.
A surprisingly effective Akron team from Section VI ripped off a six-goal run in the first half and had the Mustangs on the ropes, but because Penn Yan has been in tough games throughout the year, it knew how to respond.
The Mustangs methodically worked themselves back into the game and ultimately pulled out a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory on a goal by Austin Blumbergs with 50.9 seconds remaining.
