Skaneateles’ streak has come to an end.
The Lakers fell behind early and couldn’t keep up with the Spartans’ offense, as No. 3 Skaneateles fell to No. 1 South Jefferson, 12-5, in the Section III, Class D girls lacrosse championship at SUNY Cortland Tuesday. The Lakers had won the section title and made a trip to the state final four in each of the last five seasons.
“Every year is different. We lost 12 seniors from last year and no one expected us to be here. I’m proud of them for how far we got,” said Skaneateles coach Bridget Marquardt, who has guided the Lakers to 17 straight trips to the section finals. “Today wasn’t our day. That was an awesome team and we didn’t execute our game plan. You can’t go into a game like that and have the turnovers we had, make those mistakes and then play defense pretty much the whole game.
“They had us on our heels and we couldn’t close the gap.”
