Geneva boys’ lacrosse coach L.J. Russell firmly believes in the old saw that it’s always tough to beat a team a third time after you’ve already defeated it twice, even though he’s seen firsthand that it can be done.
“Oh, I do, trust me I do,” he said with a smile Tuesday afternoon after his Panthers throttled rival Wayne 13-2 in the Section V Class C championship game at St. John Fisher College. “That’s why this feels better.”
Two years ago, Wayne beat the Panthers twice in the regular season and then during the Section V tournament, so Russell told his team, “’If they can do it to us, we can do it to them.’ It was a nice statement to make today. We played pretty well.”
