Sheriff Lansing will seek third term in Tompkins

Sheriff Kenneth Lansing will be running for a third term as Tompkins County Sheriff this fall, his team announced in a press release on Thursday.

In an announcement video distributed to local media, Lansing said the past eight years had been filled with “numerous challenges” and lots of hard work he said he would like to see through in his ensuing term.

A former Cayuga Heights police chief, Lansing ran unopposed on both the Democratic and Independence ticket in 2014. Solely on the Independence line in 2010, he won his first term defeating 12-year incumbent and one-time County Legislator Peter Meskill by just over 1,200 votes – 47 percent of all ballots cast – after a narrow loss in the September primary, also against Meskill.
