Cayuga Co. couple accused of faking son’s cancer for donations plead not guilty

The Cayuga County couple charged for pretending their child had cancer to get donations pleaded not guilty.

Martin and Jolene LaFrance appeared in Montezuma town court Wednesday night and pleaded not guilty to charges of scheme to defraud and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s office, the couple created a Go Fund Me page for their child last year, asking for donations. Officials said they received thousands of dollars from those wanting to help, but investigators learned the child was never diagnosed with a disease.

Investigators said they were tipped off from an outside source not connected to the family. They also said the Go Fund Me page was set up last summer by the family and raised a little more than $3,000 for their son.

There is no indication that the child was aware of the scam, according to officials.
