Auditions announced for Seneca Community Players’ production Are You Being Served?

Lovers of innuendo and British humor, Flying Circus fans and seekers of laughs – look no further than Seneca Community Player’s uproarious next production Are You Being Served?. To the delight of fans everywhere, the popular British television comedy by the same name, and seen on PBS, has been adapted for the stage.

Double entendres are non-stop as the well-loved staff of Grace Brothers department store prepare first for a sale of German goods and then depart en masse for a staff holiday at a one-star hotel in Spain. Will the tropical heat, Spanish crumpet, giant woof ‘n’ poofs and randy revolutionaries prove too much for this happy band? Not a bit of it! With the aid of a nun’s habit, a bowler hat and Mrs. Slocombe’s Union Jack knickers they survive their holiday with everything intact but their modesty.

If you do not laugh out loud at the silly one-liners and antics; the innuendos and situations that the staff at Grace Brothers find themselves in, then you will probably, at the very least, be smiling at the absolute light heartedness of this production written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, the same geniuses that wrote the entire hit BBC series.
Set in the ladies’ and gentlemen’s clothing departments of Grace Brothers, a large, fictional London department store, acting rolls are available for eight men and four women ranging in age 18 to 80. Named roles include:

Mr. Humphries, mid 40s to mid 50s, a “momma’s boy” through and through. Mr. Lucas is a younger man with “all the desires of a single man”. Mr. Grainger who is in his 60s runs the men’s department.

Captain Peacock, late 40s to late 50s, is charged with “keeping order” on the sales floor. Mr. Rumbold also late 40s to late 50s, is the executive in charge of the men’s and women’s department. Young Mr. Grace is in his 80s and is one of the brothers that own the store.

Mrs. Slocombe in her 50s, is head of the women’s department. Her assistant, Miss Brahms is a younger woman waiting for her chance to take over the women’s department.

Open Auditions will be held at the Seneca Falls Library Wednesday, May 30 and Thursday, May 31 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. Auditioners will read excerpts from the script and should bring a copy of any possible rehearsal conflicts.

Are You Being Served? will be staged at the new North Park Theater located in Academy Square, 12 North Park Street, Seneca Falls on August 3,4,5,10,11 2018.
