Public comment period for $10 million downtown Auburn grant application open until May 25

The city of Auburn will once again participate in the statewide Downtown Revitalization Initiative contest and is asking the public to submit ideas for how the city could spend the $10 million prize.

The public comment period for the DRI opened for two weeks on Thursday. All comments must be submitted by 4 p.m. on May 25. The city’s application is due June 1.

To submit ideas, residents can fill out a comment card, which are available at Memorial City Hall and the Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District office, visit the city’s website, auburnny.gov, and click the 2018 DRI link at the top of the homepage, or attend a public hearing during the May 17 Auburn City Council meeting at 6 p.m.

The DRI program was introduced in 2016 and each year invests $100 million in 10 downtown communities throughout the state. One community in each region of the state will be awarded a $10 million grant to use for downtown revitalization projects. Auburn is in the Central New York economic development region. During the program’s first year, Oswego won the $10 million prize for the region. Last year, Cortland came out on top.
