The tan, jagged cliffs at Chimney Bluffs State Park are a surreal site for the first-time visitor and a marvel for the many regulars to the site along the Lake Ontario shore in this Wayne County town.
One of the best ways to take in the ever-changing view of the bluffs — which continue to evolve in shape through wind, snow and rain — is from the Bluff Trail.
But maybe not this year. The state has closed the trail because of significant erosion caused by harsh weather, and the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle that trail repairs will likely not happen until 2019.
Officials from the state agency did not respond to requests for comment from the Finger Lakes Times.
Christine Worth, tourism director for Wayne County, said the trail closing is a blow to county tourism.
“It (the park) is one of our top attractions,” she said. “That trail is the most popular trail.”
She said Chimney Bluffs is “something I market constantly,” and she noted that drone shots by John Kucko of Channel 8 in Rochester have helped highlight the bluffs’ incredible beauty.
