Is 2018 the year for Auburn to win a $10 million grant for downtown improvements? City officials hope so.
The third round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative has commenced, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday. The state will award $100 million to 10 communities โ one in each of the 10 economic development regions โ for downtown projects.
Auburn, which is part of the Central New York Regional Economic Development Council, applied for the $10 million prize in each of the first two rounds of the competition. Oswego was the 2016 winner. Cortland won the top prize last year.
Past winners from other regions include Geneva in the Finger Lakes, Rome in the Mohawk Valley and Watkins Glen in the Southern Tier.
“We have seen firsthand the excitement and transformative nature of these investments โ turning downtowns into economic engines for their communities and beyond,” Cuomo said in a statement. “This new round of funding will provide these downtowns new opportunities to rebuild for 21st century needs and foster growth that will be felt across the entire region.”
