In an update Monday afternoon, authorities say the 21-year-old driver of a vehicle that crashed, causing serious injuries to a 17-year-old passenger — has been charged.
Justin Palombi, 21, of Phelps — the operator of the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, which slammed into a tree and utility pole on South Marbletown Road on Sunday.
The accident happened around 5 p.m., according to deputies.
Palombi was ticketed for speeding, failure to keep right, unlicensed operation, reckless driving and driving while ability impaired by drugs, according to Sheriff Phil Povero. He says that additional charges are pending.
Kaitlyn Ingerick, 17, of Phelps suffered multiple injuries — including leg fractures, facial lacerations and fractures. She was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by Finger Lakes Ambulance where she is now listed in guarded condition.
Ingerick is an 11th grader at Midlakes High School. According to school officials, crisis counselors have been activated for students and faculty.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reports that the Phelps Fire Department, Newark Ambulance, and Finger Lakes Ambulance responded to South Marbletown Road in Phelps for a one-car crash Sunday around 4:57 p.m.
Justin Palombi, 21, of Phelps was traveling north when he lost control of his vehicle after traveling around a curve. The Malibu left the roadway — where it struck a tree and utility pole, according to deputies.
Palombi suffered a hand injury and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.

The passenger of the vehicle, identified as Kaitlyn Ingerick, 17, of Phelps — had to be extracted from the vehicle. She suffered multiple injuries — and is listed in ‘critical’ condition, according to deputies.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
