Lake Ontario shoreline homeowners left with big mess after die-off

Thousands of dead fish are washing up on the shores of Irondequoit Bay, particularly on the Webster side. It’s not unusual this time of year, but some residents say it’s the worst they’ve seen in decades of living on the water.

“We’re looking forward to the warm weather, but I don’t know what we’re going to do with all this fish,” said homeowner George Wolf. He says he took a wheelbarrow full of the shad away from his boat launch Monday. But thousands of dead fish remained.

Wolf says below average temperatures has kept the smell down, but he knows that won’t last – especially with higher temperatures forecasted later this week.

“There’s just too many for a single person or even our neighborhood to take care of,” he said.
