Town of Fleming hopes reassessment will lower tax rate by two-thirds

Fleming held a public meeting Wednesday to explain the process of a reassessment to residents as the town is roughly halfway through its first reassessment since the 1980s.

More than 60 people packed the meeting room at the Fleming Fire Station 2, where Town Assessor Jeff Bartholomew held an informational meeting and gave a presentation to explain to residents why Fleming needs to do a reassessment and how the process will unfold.

Bartholomew explained that New York Real Property Tax Law Section 305 states: “All real property in each assessing unit shall be assessed at a uniform percentage of value.” The premise of this tax law “tells us everyone should be treated fairly,” and equal value properties should have equal value assessments, Bartholomew said.
