Wolfs thankful for ‘stunning’ show of support

Walter and Doris Wolf try not to focus on all the personal items and memories they lost in a quick-moving fire that essentially destroyed their historic cobblestone home on Birdsey Road.

Instead, they prefer to rave about how the community has rallied to help them rebuild their lives.

The couple, well known for their deep civic involvement, are now themselves on the receiving end of the kind of help they’ve dished out for years.

The Wolfs are living about 2 miles north of their former home in a single-story house their insurance company is leasing from Gary Sheppard. It is filled with furniture, appliances, kitchenware and clothing — all donated by friends and neighbors. They lost everything in the Jan. 10 fire.

“We were left with the clothes on our backs,’’ said Doris, sitting on a couch with a cat and dog nearby.

The house is rented for them until the end of the year. The Wolfs’ long-range plans are up in the air as they are involved in “discussions’’ with their insurance company.
