SUV occupants sent to trauma center after serious crash, man arrested on DWI charge

Seriously injured occupants inside an SUV were sent to the Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre on Thursday night following a crash that occurred on the 1400 block of Elmira Road in the Town of Newfield.

Tompkins County deputies responded to the crash scene and found a pickup truck and an SUV that were involved in a head-on collision, deputies said. Deputies said they determined Gary Stow, a 37-year-old pickup truck driver from Horseheads, was intoxicated, so they arrested him.

The number of occupants in the SUV was not released.

Stow was charged with DWI, uninspected motor vehicle, failure to keep right and moving from a lane unsafely, authorities said.

New York State Police, New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Team, Bangs Ambulance and Newfield Fire Company assisted at the scene, deputies said. The road was closed for several hours until it later reopened.
