Cayuga County Sheriff David Gould says it wasn’t an easy decision, but one that came together with his family.
His career, which spans more than 50 years will come to an end, as Gould will not seek another term as sheriff.
“I have been so honored to be able to have served my country in the United States Army, my state as a member of the New York State Police, to serve my county as the elected Cayuga County Sheriff and to be able to serve the citizens of this great community,” Gould said in a statement. “I have always said that I was born in Cayuga County, lived my whole life here and will spend the rest of my life in this beautiful community.”
Sheriff Gould thanked his Undersheriff Jim Stowell and Jail Administrator Jim Taber, as well as the men and women of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.
“I also want to thank the friendship and support of all the Members of the Auburn, Moravia, Port Byron, Weedsport Police Departments, New York State Police, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police and all our friends in all of the Federal branches, including the FBI, the Secret Service, the Department of Homeland Security, ICE, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” he continued. “I want to thank District Attorney Jon Budelmann and his entire staff for their support of all my staff. I want to thank all our first responders including all our paid and volunteer Fire Department Members and the State Sheriffs’ Association in Albany. I also want to thank our elected officials for their support and assistance. This includes all our County Legislators, County Treasurer Jim Orman, County Clerk Sue Dwyer and County Coroner Adam Duckett.”
“When I campaigned for the Sheriff’s Office I used a slogan that I would like to close with: ‘Respect should never be demanded. Respect should always be earned’,” he concluded.
And with that, Sheriff Gould’s term will come to a close on December 31st at midnight.
