A 10-year-old boy battling brain cancer who became an honorary Ithaca police officer died Saturday, the police department said.
Colin Hayward Toland became an honorary officer in September 2016. He was enlisted in December 2016 to arrest the Grinch for trying to steal Christmas in Ithaca.
Chief John Barber met Colin and his family during a community barbecue earlier that summer, and he learned about the boy’s goal to become an officer.
Colin’s love of helping people and contributing to the community made him the perfect candidate to become an honorary officer, Barber said at the time.
“He possesses everything that we need in a good police officer — courage, bravery and strength,” Barber said.
On Sunday, the police department announced that the 10-year-old had “returned to the cosmos in the loving embrace of his family.”
