Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike said a car/pedestrian accident caused by Wednesday’s wintry weather could have turned out much worse.
It happened about 2:30 p.m. on Route 54, near the intersection of Ridge Road. Kristen Baker, 20, of Bath was driving east when she attempted to exit her lane and steer around a girl walking along the highway. Spike said the snowy conditions caused Baker’s car to be pulled back to the right, resulting in her hitting the pedestrian.
The pedestrian, Rachel Martin, 10, of Route 54, lives nearby. Penn Yan Ambulance took Martin to Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan for treatment of a back injury.
No tickets were issued.
“We were very lucky,” Spike said.
Shortly after the accident, Spike issued a travel advisory for the county due to the blowing and drifting snow, primarily on north-south roads. Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero issued one Wednesday afternoon as well.
