Towns in Yates will receive funding for broadband

Six Yates County towns will share more than $180,000 in grant money earmarked for rural broadband development.

The grants were announced last week by state Sen. Tom O'Mara, R-58 of Big Flats, and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano, R-132 of Corning; their districts include Yates County. The funding is related to a $2.8 million fiber-optic network and broadband infrastructure backbone in the county. County and state officials said the network will improve internet access and, subsequently, economic development opportunities, health care, education and quality of life.
