Former Varick employee charged with stealing $166K pleads guilty

Sentencing will be held April 9th for the former Varick Town Court clerk who admitted to stealing upwards of $166,999 over a span of seven years.

Julie Dougherty, 44, of Varick pleaded guilty this week to second-degree grand larceny. The crime, which is a Class F felony, is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Seneca County Judge Dennis Bender released the 44-year-old, who still resides in Varick until sentencing.

Dougherty was arrested last year by Troopers after a lengthy investigation into money that was missing from the court system’s auditing process.

She was suspended from her duties immediately after arrest, but later admitted to stealing $166,999 from 2010 through 2017.

Judge Dennis Bender is scheduled to sentence her to five years’ probation, and could serve jail time.

Whether she serves jail time or not, though, Dougherty will be expected to pay full-restitution.
