When basketball fans learned that Clyde-Savannah would drop from Class C2 to Class D1 this season, many assumed a Sectional title would be a given. After winning the Wayne County League for a second consecutive season, the Golden Eagles turned their sites towards sectionals, and a trip to the Blue Cross Arena.
Waiting for C-S, was a surprising Finger Lakes West squad, the Honeoye Bulldogs who boasted two 1,000 point scorers and had their eyes on an upset after jumping out to a 13-8 lead at the outset of Saturday’s Section V Class D1 Championship Game.
.
With the Bulldogs leading by 5, senior leader Jon Marble suffered a horrible leg injury that stopped play for several minutes and resulted in Marble being taken off the court on a stretcher as the Golden Eagles retreated to their locker room and left several Honeoye players visibly shaken.
After play resumed, Clyde-Savannah took full control of the game, eventually cruising to a 69-47 victory for the school’s first Sectional Championship since 2014. They will move on to face Class D2 Champion Prattsburgh in the Section V Class D NYS play-in game next week.
Derrick Chance was named the tournament MVP after leading all scorers in the game with 26 points. Fellow senior Dru Carnevale finished with 20 and Marcus Chance scored 12 points.
