Wayne Train’s next stop is the Big House; All FL West girls championship game set for Saturday (W-FL round-up 2/28)

It was a tremendous showcase for Finger Lakes West girls basketball at Honeoye Falls-Lima on Wednesday night in the Section V girls Class C2 semifinal round featuring Red Jacket, Bloomfield and a surging South Seneca Lady Falcons squad. Meanwhile, in Victor, the Wayne Eagles smothering 2-3 zone propelled Coach Bill Thompson’s squad to the Class A2 Championship game in the Blue Cross Arena on Saturday. It was a rough night for the Wayne County girls as both Red Creek and Gananda fell in Bloomfield in the girls C1 semifinal round. Full results and recaps below…

Class A2 Boys Semifinals at Victor HS:

#2 Wayne 36, #6 Honeoye Falls-Lima 25
The Wayne Eagles returned to the Section V Class A2 title game one year after winning their school’s first ever Sectional Championship with a 36-25 win over the HF-L Cougars in the late game at Victor High School on Wednesday night. Senior Braeden Zenelovic led the Eagles with 11 points in a low scoring affair that saw Wayne’s 2-3 match-up zone hold Honeoye Falls to just 25 points. Nick Carmichael and Logan Blankenberg were saddled with foul trouble for most of the game but finished with 10 points each while point guard Billy Thompson pulled down 6 rebounds and recorded 3 steals. Wayne will take on NE Douglas College Prep, a team they defeated 62-47 on their home court in late December. The Class A2 title game will tip at noon on Saturday inside the Blue Cross Arena.

In the other half of the A2 semifinal doubleheader at Victor the #4 seed NE Douglas College Prep upset the top seed Leadership Academy 64-59.

Class A1 Boys Semifinals at Webster-Schroeder:

#1 Greece Athena 70, #4 Pittsford-Mendon 61
#2 Irondequoit 56, #3 Pittsford-Sutherland 48

Class C1 Girls Semifinals at Bloomfield:

#1 Red Creek 48, #4 ND-Batavia 52
Red Creek’s freshman standout Isabella Wilbur was ineligible for Wednesday night’s Class C1 semifinal game after being disqualified from her team’s quarterfinal game against Byron-Bergen on a controversial call. Wilbur’s family contested the suspension in court and she was able to play on Wednesday night due to the pending nature of the lawsuit. In the end, Wilbur’s presence on the court wasn’t enough to lift the Red Creek Rams into the finals as they fell to Notre Dame-Batavia by a score of 52-48. Red Creek held a 40-32 lead after the third quarter but couldn’t close out the game in the final period. The Rams season ends with a Wayne County League title but one game short of a chance to capture the school’s first ever girls or boys Sectional Championship.

#2 Letchworth 45, #3 Gananda 31
The Gananda Blue Panthers lost to the #2 seed Letchworth on Wednesday night seeing their season end just one-game short of an opportunity to defend the Class C1 championship on Saturday at Rush-Henrietta.

Class C2 Girls Semifinals at Honeoye-Falls Lima HS:

#7 Red Jacket 62, #2 Bloomfield 46
The Bloomfield Bombers defeated fellow Finger Lakes West league-mate twice in the regular season by just a combined 3 points en route to the league title. The teams met for a third time on Wednesday night in the Section V Class C2 semifinals and the Indians would roll to the win, advancing to the title game on Saturday at 1 pm at Rush-Henrietta High School. In a very physical game, Red Jacket was able to seize an early lead and build on it throughout the ball game with Bloomfield’s standout power forward Braelin Scott dealing with foul trouble for most of the game. Scott would finish with 20 points and 12 rebounds in her final high school basketball game. For Red Jacket, sophomore Sydney Close led the way with 17 points and junior Sara VanAken finished with 16 points. Seniors Mallory Doddy and Olivia Spencer scored 8 and 7 respectively.

#4 South Seneca 68, #1 Oakfield-Alabama 44
Coach Heather Mott’s South Seneca Lady Falcons are coming off two straight Sectional titles and NYSPHSAA Final Four trips including a state championship in 2016. After losing 4 starters off last year’s squad, South Seneca struggled early in the season and ultimately finished second in the FL West standings. On Wednesday night, however, the Lady Falcons looked every bit as dominant as the great teams of the past two seasons as they steamrolled the top seed in Class C2, Oakfield-Alabama, in a game that was never close from the start. The Falcons’ aggressive, trapping defense created scoring opportunities off of turnovers and South Seneca was efficient in their half court offense. Jenna McDonald led the way with 19 points, 6 assists and 5 steals while senior Skylar Shaulis scored 14 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Junior center Jade Parsons was dominant with 13 points and 18 rebounds. Skylar’s younger sister, freshman Logan Shaulis, finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Emma and Alissa Fletcher combined for 11 points in the win. South Seneca will play for their third-straight Sectional title on Saturday against Red Jacket at Rush Henrietta at 1 pm in a game that can be heard live on FingerLakes1.com.
