New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is praising Dick's Sporting Goods after its CEO announced its stores will no longer sell assault-style weapons and raise the minimum age for firearm purchases.
Cuomo, a Democrat, said in a statement Dick's changes are "smart measures to keep weapons out of the wrong hands."
Dick's, which was founded in Binghamton in 1948, released a statement Wednesday detailing the new policy and the reasons behind its actions. Dick's said 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, the suspect in a Florida school shooting that claimed the lives of 14 students and three staffers, had legally bought a shotgun from one of their stores in November 2017. It was not the gun Cruz used during his admitted attack but Dick's says "it could have been."
