Lyons rolls to the Blue Cross Arena; Undefeated Midlakes girls head to Class B finals (W-FL round-up 2/26)

Three Wayne-Finger Lakes teams were in action on Monday night to kick-off the semifinal rounds of the 2018 Section V boys and girls basketball tournaments and two of the three teams punched their ticket to Championship Weekend. Check out the results from Monday night below…

#1 Midlakes 59, #4 Wellsville 52
Class B Girls Semifinal at Honeoye Falls-Lima HS

The Midlakes girls varsity basketball team remained undefeated and improved to 23-0 on the season wth a 59-52 win against the fourth seed Wellsville Lions on Monday night at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. The Screaming Eagles were up 20 at halftime but Wellsville came charging back before ultimately falling short by six. Midlakes standout junior guard Alaina Forbes finished with 17 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals while her teammate freshman Cara Walker scored 17 points to go along with 4 assists and 4 rebounds. Junior Macy Kisner added 10 points and 7 rebounds and Sydney Passalacqua scored 6 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Senior point guard Jordan Naeye scored 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and Hannah Galloway and Claire DeBoover scored 2 points each. Up next for Midlakes is a date in the Class B Championship game against Bath-Haverling who defeated Dansville, 67-64, in the other half of the semifinal bracket. Midlakes will have to contend with Jadyn Abrams who scored 35 points in Lady Rams victory. #3 Lyons 92, #7 Cuba-Rushford 50
Class C2 Boys Semifinal at Bath-Haverling HS

The Lyons Lions will return to the Blue Cross Arena for the first time since their last Sectional title in 2015 after rolling past the Cuba-Rushford Rebels with a 42 point win at Bath-Haverling High School on Monday night in the Section V Class C2 semifinals. It was a fast start to the game with Lyons leading 21-20 after the first quarter and extending the lead to 43-32 at halftime. The second half was all Lyons, however, as they pulled away for a 92-50 victory. Junior superstar Justice Smith had another huge game finishing with 33 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 8 steals. Fellow juniors Kerel Kelly and David Weaver scored 17 and 15 points respectively and sophomore Benji Kemp had 8 points and 8 rebounds. Andrew Clement was the leading scorer for Cuba-Rushford with 20. Lyons will face #1 Perry for the Class C2 title as the Yellowjackets defeated C.G. Finney at Bloomfield High School on Monday night by a 2 point margin, 47-45. #5 Marcus Whitman 42, #1 Northstar Christian 66
Class C1 Boys Semifinal at Bloomfield HS

The Marcus Whitman Wildcats gave it their best shot and were able to hang with the 22-1 Northstar Christian Knights into the third quarter of Monday night’s Class C1 semifinal game at Bloomfield High School. The Wildcats led the heavily favored Knights 11-10 after the first quarter and trailed 26-21 at halftime. Northstar outscored Whitman 23-15 in the 3rd period to open up a lead they would only build on in the final quarter finishing with a 66-42 win and a trip to their fourth consecutive sectional final at the Blue Cross Arena where they will face undefeated #2 Pembroke at 5:00 pm. Miles Brown led Northstar with 23 points playing most of the game in foul trouble. Tray Roberts added 13 points including back-to-back three pointers in the third to help the Knights pull away from the Finger Lakes West champs. For Whitman, Riley McLoud scored 11 points in his final game in a Wildcat uniform. Junior Jon Donovan added 9 and senior Ben Stone, sophomore Seth Benedict and freshman Ryan Herod scored 6 points each. Marcus Whitman finishes their season with a 17-4 record. Also on Monday night…

In Class D2, #1 Prattsburgh defeated #5 Avoca 82-62 and #6 Bradford upset #2 Belfast 60-47 in a semifinal doubleheader at Dansville High School.

In the Class D1 girls semifinals, Pavilion edged Fillmore 27-25 and Wheatland-Chili nipped York, 32-30.
