Obituary: Former-Sheriff Tom Cleere passes away at his home

Thomas Cleere, 88, passed away Sunday (February 18, 2018) at home.

Friends and family may call Thursday (February 22, 2018) from 3 to 6 p.m. at Mull Funeral Home, 113 Virginia Street, Waterloo. A memorial mass will be celebrated Friday (February 23, 2018) at 10 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Church, 25 Center Street, Waterloo. Burial, with full Military Honors, will follow in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.

The family request memorial contributions be directed to Lifetime Care Hospice, 3111 Winton Rd. South Rochester, NY 14623-2988.

Tom was born on June 3, 1929 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Thomas and Lydia (Bradman) Cleere. He was a graduate of St. Francis Grammar School and DeSales High School in Geneva and the New York State Police Academy. He served our Country in the Army Infantry from January 10, 1951 to January 1, 1953 during which time he spent an approximate year in Korea. In May 1956 he enlisted in the New York State Police and after 25 years he retired February 12, 1981 with an outstanding rating as a Zone Sergeant. He served as Seneca County Undersheriff from 1981-1984 and Seneca County Sheriff from 1985 to 1992. In 1992 Tom began work in security at the New York Chiropractic College and was designated Chief of Security in September of 2004 and retired December 31, 2012.



Tom was a life member of Waterloo VFW Post #6433, Waterloo American Legion Warner VanRiper Post #435, Retired Police Officers of New York State and Former Troopers of New York State. He was also a member of St. Mary’s Church, Waterloo.

Tom is survived by his daughter, Laura (Marion) Taylor of Seneca Falls; his sons John (Lori Ann) Cleere of Seneca Falls and Michael (Holly) Cleere of Elbridge; brothers Robert (Jan) Cleere of Arizona, Steve (Debbie) Cleere of California; sisters Nona (Bob) Perry of California and Helen (Raoul) Molinan of Montana; grandchildren Colleen, David, Tom, Maureen, Rebecca Hayley, Rachel and Mallory; five great-grandchildren including a special friend and great-granddaughter, Sierra.

Tom was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine A. (Maha) Cleere, who passed away February 24, 2007 just eight days short of their 50th wedding anniversary; and his brother Fred in 2004.
