‘STAY OFF ICE’: Sheriff outlines concerns after Sodus Bay rescue on Thursday

Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts says a 75-year-old Rose man was successfully rescued from Sodus Bay after he fell into the ice while attempting to cross it on a snowmobile.

According to deputies, their office responded to Sodus Bay along with the Sodus Point and Alton fire departments for a subject that fell through the ice while attempting to cross the Bay on a snowmobile.

The operator, identified as Richard E. Crombach, 75, was successfully rescued by ice rescue personnel from all three agencies and brought to shore for medical treatment.

He suffered no apparent issues from the incident, but was transported by ambulance to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

New York State Police, Wolcott Fire Department, Silver Waters Ambulance, Eastern Wayne E.M.S. and Wayne County A.L.S. also assisted at the scene.

Sheriff Virts recommends that everyone stay off the ice as it’s currently ‘unpredictable’.
