Democrats from 3 counties designate Balter to challenge Katko for Congress

Democratic Party committees from three counties in Central New York voted Wednesday night to designate Dana Balter as their candidate to challenge U.S. Rep. John Katko in the November election.

Balter, 42, of Syracuse, beat out three others to win the designation in the 24th Congressional District from the Democratic committees of Cayuga, Wayne and Oswego counties, said Ian Phillips, chairman of the Cayuga County Democratic Committee.

Phillips declined to disclose the final tally of the vote of almost 200 committee members from the three counties.

"It was an enthusiastic vote for Dana Balter," Phillips said. "We feel very strongly in the three counties that Dana Balter is well positioned to hold John Katko accountable for his record."
