Steuben County officials announced residents will be allowed to return to their homes in the hamlet of Campbell effective 5 p.m. but will not be allowed to enter until appropriate safety checks have taken place. County Manager Jack Wheeler said homes in the hamlet must be checked by Corning Natural Gas and other emergency responders for potential problems with utilities before occupants will be allowed to enter.
“We want to make sure these homes are safe, even if flood waters have receded,” Wheeler said. “We thank everyone for their patience.”

Wheeler said the local state of emergency and evacuation in the hamlet – declared at 2:45 p.m. Friday – has not been lifted yet.
County Emergency Services Director Tim Marshall said the Finger Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross has established an emergency shelter for residents at the Campbell Savona Elementary School on State Route 226. Residents that cannot re-enter their homes due to water damage can find shelter at the Campbell Savona Elementary School, Marshall said. Emergency responders will be on hand to assist residents with their concerns, Wheeler said.
