Linden St. project may be dead in Geneva

There was much skepticism about Calvin Ruthven’s plans to redevelop a long-vacant building at 29 Linden St. because the project involved, somewhat ironically, tearing part of it down.

That demolition happened. However, not much else has — and now the future of the project to convert the building into a beer garden and lower-level bar is in question.

Further, Ruthven and the city are involved in a legal tangle that moved to another level last week. That’s when City Council passed a resolution to set in motion an effort to force Ruthven to secure the structure, if not finish the redevelopment.

“We are at a real impasse,” City Manager Matt Horn told Council about the Linden Street site.

Horn noted the project is “halfway done,” and that is part of the city’s concern.
