Two hospitalized at Upstate after water rescue in Owasco Lake

Firefighters were involved in a water rescue, which took place on Sunday afternoon.

The incident unfolded in Owasco Lake near 4768 West Lake Road, according to first responders, who said that it took around 30 minutes to retrieve the individual from the water. Scanner traffic indicates that the person was in a kayak when it overturned — resulting in the person being submerged for a lengthy period of time.

Units from Fleming and Owasco Water Rescue were called to the scene. The incident may have involved hunters, who were retrieving decoys from the water. First responders did note that the patient was roughly 100 feet off shore.

AMR Ambulance transported one patient to Upstate University Hospital. According to first responders, that individual was suffering from hypothermia due to the extended time in the water. Reports indicate that a second hunter was transported to Auburn Community Hospital.
