Nine newborn piglets died following a fire in South Bristol Friday morning.
Fire crews were called to Sweet Gum Road in Ontario County just after 9 a.m. for reports of the fire. At the scene, firefighters say they found a fire that had collapsed part of a barn.
Fire crews from the Honeoye-Richmond Fire Department say the location of the shelter was an issue. The structure was on a remote road on a hill. As a result, crews had to haul water up the hill to get to the scene. Not helping matters were cold temps that were hovering around 10 degrees at the time.
Firefighters say the barn was a total loss. Inside the barn, nine piglets were also killed. Crews say the baby pigs had just been born on Christmas Day.
