Hobart’s Hanna will leave lasting legacy

When people talk about the Mike Hanna legacy at Hobart College, they will probably mention equality among sports, doing the right thing, and improving quality of life for student-athletes.

Hanna is retiring as director of athletics, stepping away from a 37-year career in which he brought Statesmen athletic programs to the forefront of the small-college sports scene.

He’ll be the first to tell you he couldn’t have done it without the assistance and support of others. Of course, those people will tell you Hobart athletics wouldn’t be where it is today without his leadership and guidance.

Early in his career at Hobart, Hanna vowed to spread fairness and equality across all sports. With a lot on his plate in that first year, others offered to organize the annual awards dinner. Hanna noticed, however, that “the football MVP received a 2-foot tall trophy and the tennis MVP was given a small silver cup.”
