Geneva Town Board opposes incinerator project

The Town Board has come out against what Supervisor Mark Venuti called the “trash incinerator” proposed for the former Seneca Army Depot in Romulus.

“The more I learn about this, the more I believe the people peddling this are totally wrong,” Venuti said. “They are making it sound like some kind of ‘green energy’ thing, and it’s the opposite.”

The proposed $365 million waste-to-energy facility was formally introduced to the Romulus Planning Board on Dec. 4. It is proposed by Circular EnerG LLC of Rochester for a 48-acre parcel on the former depot — the land is owned by Flaum Management and managed by Seneca Depot LLC.

Even though no public comment was allowed, about 250 people attended the meeting, which included an informational session. The project needs Planning Board approval and a special-use permit, as well as state and federal approvals.
