Skaneateles Furs to close after 34 years in business

Skaneateles Furs will be closing its doors as the shop’s owner plans to retire after more than three decades in business.

The building, located at 36 E. Genesee St. in the village, is owned by The Village Teasel, Inc., based in Rochester. The building’s owner could not be reached for comment.

The fur shop, owned by Eloise Luchsinger, has been the target of many protests by animal rights activists during the business’s 34-year history, as well as the target of a strong-armed robbery in October 2016.

Luchsinger declined to comment on her decision to close. Signs on the windows of the store announce a retirement sale.

Tara Lynn, the executive director of the Skaneateles Chamber of Commerce, said she does not know what will be done with the building once Luchsinger closes her businesses. However, Lynn said she does not anticipate the storefront sitting vacant for long.
