A Massachusetts man is facing felony charges after state police and the state Department of Taxation and Finance seized hundreds of contraband tobacco products, according to a press release on Thursday.
Following a traffic stop by state police, Yasin Khan, of 356 Park St., West Springfield, Mass. was allegedly found possessing 210 cartons of contraband cigarettes and 208 pounds of loose, untaxed tobacco. The tax department's criminal investigators arrested the 39-year-old after confirming the packs carried a Kentucky tax stamp, and not a New York tax stamp, as required by law.
Khan was charged with criminal tax fraud and the possession of transport of more than 30,000 unstamped cigarettes, both felonies. He was also charged with transporting more than 50 pounds of tobacco, a misdemeanor. In addition, he could face fines up to $600 per carton seized.
